Are you interested in exploring the new generation of Japanese landscape and the traditional Japanese garden design? Are you curious about the “walking street” where people converge for an all night shopping? Landscape Architecture Program at OSU is opening a summer design study program in May 2006. This course will introduce you to a series of urban landscape and historic garden design around Japan’s cultural city, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka and Thailand’s ancient city Chiangmai and capital city Bangkok. The study will concentrate in the use of stone, water, greenery, colors, light, spaces, sequences, feeling and senses.



This will be a three-week study program sponsored by Landscape Architecture Program, OSU. The cost including lodging, local transportation, historic site admission, and program fee will be around $1600 not including tuition and airfare. Tuition is in-state for residence and non-residence international students alike for 1 to 6 credit hours. Travel scholarships of up to $300 are available for qualified students. Students are expected to do photo journals, site sketching, and report writing. Participants can be in any majors or citizens who sign up for OSU extension summer course.

Tokyo Japan Tsunami

Japan is mobilizing troops and aircrafts to evacuate those who are stranded to provide them with shelter. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called for international aid, and President Obama has announced that a U.S. aircraft carrier was en route to assist another warship off the coast of Japan.

As loved ones console each other throughout the devastated country, those in the U.S. can stay connected with breaking news, and wish the best for the country’s victims.

Despite the troubles and constant aftershocks people are going about their daily business with an amazing resilience. In the North of Japan things are obviously significantly different, but in and around the capital life goes on, shaken but by no means down. In a world where the media works hard to capture an ever demanding audience by sensationalising journalism by focusing on images of disaster and catastrophe, it is easy to loose track of what is also happening unreported.

Tokyo Japan TsunamiTokyo: Japan was struck by a magnitude-8.8 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, triggering a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter.

In various locations along Japan’s coast, TV footage showed severe flooding, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK.

Officials were trying to assess possible damage from the quake but had no immediate details.

The quake that struck 2:46 p.m. was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.8.

There are only 57 rooms in this luxury boutique hotel in a skyscraper overlooking Ginza and Tokyo Station, each with floor-to-ceiling windows. There's nothing particularly Japanese about the decor, except for the stunning city views that serve as an ever-present backdrop. Ask for a room on the station side—on the highest floor possible—for a vertiginous view of Japan's famed bullet trains. The spa takes advantage of local culture with a stone bath and treatment rooms for Japanese scrubs and massage. The hotel also houses Ekki Bar & Grill, a contemporary American restaurant. The location's not bad, either: Marunouchi used to be strictly a business district, but in the last five years it has been transformed into a chic shopping and restaurant area.

Too compensate for this they have come up with a very innovative idea capsule hotels a very small tube that is big enough to sleep comfortably in that has a tv temp controls radio alarm clock if you are claustrophobic you would not want to stay here but the tube is very comfortable and half the price of a regular hotel room.

Tokyo Tower is Japan’s answer to the Eiffel Tower, and by answer I mean that the Eiffel Tower was used as a model and Tokyo Tower was built to be 13 meters taller than it’s sibling in France. This 333 meter steel structure is the largest self supporting steel structure in the world and has television and radio broadcast attenas and is a tourist attraction. The main observatory offers great views, but personally I prefer Roppongi Hills Tower.

Thoughts on Wrigley Field

Pros:
* The most charming thing about Wrigley Field, for me, was not the ivy. In fact, it was not in the ballpark at all. It was the dozens of building rooftops being used as seating for the game. How clever, how unique and how genius. American ingenuity and drive for $ at its best.
* There were no doubt less ads at Wrigley Field than any other ballpark in the U.S. The Ivy wall features only two ads- both for Under Armor. There are a couple more ads, one for Scott's Turf Builder on the Cubs dugout. That's about it, though. Can't complain. Very charming.
* The seagulls, all over the field and the roof were a cool touch, reminding us all that we share this planet.
* Friendly die-hards willing to have a conversation about baseball. Electric atmosphere throughout the park. Gotta love sell-out crowd after sell-out crowd.

Cons:
* The scoreboard is too small! You have no way of knowing the score of half the games being played in baseball.
* There is no jumbo-screen, convenient for replays.
* I'd prefer if the stadium was facing out towards Downtown Chicago. The view is, instead of ugly lakeside apartment high rises.
